Commit Message Links

Gitfox can turn commit-message patterns into clickable links.

To search for an issue while writing a commit message, use commit message autocomplete. The /i command inserts the reference; link rules control how references become clickable links.

Open Repository → Open Link Manager… or press L, then choose Commit Message Links.

Each rule has:

  • Regular Expression
  • Link Template

For example, this commit message:

Fix sidebar refresh bug #123

Can be matched with this regular expression:

#(\d+)

With this link template:

https://example.org/issues/$1

Gitfox turns #123 into a clickable link to https://example.org/issues/123. The $1 placeholder uses the first capture group from the regular expression. You can reference additional capture groups with $2, $3, and so on.

For a Jira reference such as PROJ-123, add a rule with this regular expression:

\b(PROJ-\d+)\b

And this link template:

https://your-team.atlassian.net/browse/$1

Replace PROJ with your project key and your-team.atlassian.net with your Jira site’s host. To insert Jira references with autocomplete, connect a Jira Cloud account and select it in the repository’s issue sources.

The Link Manager also has a Repository Links tab. Add named URLs there, or click Automatic to let Gitfox populate links from repository information when possible.

Link rules are stored with the repository’s Gitfox preferences.
